Youth Training Program

The OhioMeansJobs Center of Shelby County has training funds available through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) to provide services to low-income youth, ages 14 - 21, who face barriers to employment.

Shelby County Ohio Job Family Services Workforce Investment Act WIA Youth Program

Service strategies, developed by the youth services provider, prepare youth for employment and/or post-secondary education through strong linkages between academic and occupational learning.

These strategies must incorporate one or more of the ten required WIA youth program elements. These elements are:

  • Tutoring, study skills & dropout prevention
  • Alternative Education
  • Summer employment when linked to academic and occupational learning
  • Paid and unpaid work experiences
  • Occupational skills training
  • Leadership Development
  • Supportive services (such as transportation, child care, work uniforms, tools, etc.)
  • Adult mentoring for 12 months
  • Follow-up services for 12 months
  • Comprehensive guidance and counseling

The current youth provider for Shelby County is the Sidney Shelby County Opportunity School operated through the Shelby County Educational Service Center.

to retain a job once they are working.
Workshops are taught by instructors
from Upper Valley Career Center and
Aspire.

Government Shutdown
Effects on SNAP
(Food Assistance)

As a result of the February SNAP benefit being issued early due to the partial Federal shutdown that ended January 25th, Ohio is adjusting the March benefit issuance schedule. Eligible families will receive half of their March benefit on February 22, 2019, and the rest of the benefits will be issued on the normal March issuance date.
