CHILD CARE PROVIDER INFORMATION

The Shelby County Department of Job and Family Services offers comprehensive support for individuals seeking to become licensed child care providers, guiding them through the licensing process with detailed information and resources. Our licensing specialist provides valuable assistance in meeting state regulations. This includes training requirements, health and safety standards, and facility inspections. The goal is to ensure that new providers are well-prepared to offer high-quality care that meets the needs of children and families in the community.

TYPES OF CHILD CARE PROVIDERS

The Shelby County Department of Job and Family Services recommends to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services the licensure of Type A and Type B Child Care Homes and Providers. 

Type A Home providers can care for 7-12 children at one time; however, each staff member can care for no more than six children at one time (and no more than three children under age two).  

Type B Home providers can care for no more than 6 children at one time (and no more than 3 children under age 2). Children under 6 years of age related to the provider (including the provider’s own children) and residents of the home must be included in total group size.   

LICENSURE

If one plans to provide publicly-funded child care and become a Licensed Child Care Provider, he/she must be recommended for licensure through the County Department of Job and Family Services.  There are state-established guidelines and regulations that include, but are not limited to the following:

 

  • Home must be inspected

  • Must be 18 years old and have a HS Diploma or GED

  • Must be a Shelby County resident

  • Medical Statement required

  • Additional Trainings required

  • Background checks required for all adults in the home

APPLICATIONS

The application must be completed online. 

There is also a $25 non-refundable fee.

ODJFS CHILD CARE
TIME, ATTENDANCE,
& PAYMENT (TAP) SYSTEM

Licensed Child Care Providers are required to use the TAP system to record attendance of children who receive publicly funded child care. 

 

The caretaker or a person eligible to pick up or drop off children at a provider will use a tablet or their smart phone to record the children’s attendance.
